New iPhone Rumors Reiterate Claims of Smaller Dock Connector, No Change to Screen Aspect Ratio

Apple is planning on implementing a new, smaller dock connector, according to a reportby iMore. The site has been reliable in the past and correctly predicted the release of an LTE equipped iPad. iMore also reported that Apple is still in the prototyping phase for the next iPhone and that the design is not yet set in stone.

Despite some rumors to the contrary, according to our sources Apple still hasn’t finalized the design of the next generation iPhone 5 (or whatever Apple ends up calling iPhone 5,1). No giant screen. No 16:9 aspect ratio. No metal back.

[…]

Once again we’re hearing that if the screen size does change, it won’t be by a lot (no larger than 4-inches). We’ve heard nothing to indicate a planned change in the aspect ratio either way (and such a change still doesn’t make much sense to us).

iLounge previously claimed that the next iPhone would have a smaller, redesigned dock connector as well as a 4″ screen that is larger in height only — this would result in an adjustment to the screen’s aspect ratio. The iPhone 4′s design has served Apple very well, with the company selling millions upon millions of units. It is possible that the company will choose to stick with the successful design, albeit with some minor changes, rather than a wholesale redesign.

Other recent iPhone rumors include a claims that the next iPhone will launch in September; another that it would use the same micro-SIM as current iPhones, rather than a new nano-SIM concept; and that the next iPhone will retain its physical home button – a claim that iMore reiterates

HTC admits its bulky, quick-dying LTE phones kinda suck

After a long streak of skyrocketing earnings, HTC’s climb towards the stars seems to have stalled. Q4 was not kind to the company and CFO Winston Yung thinks he knows the reason why. During the today’s earnings call Yung admitted that HTC “dropped the ball” with its selection of LTE devices. He conceded that the bulky handsets simply failed on a design and spec level – especially when it came to battery life – and were not selling nearly as well as expected. Unsurprisingly, the company promises to turn its fortunes around with the next product cycle, which is rumored to kick off at MWC with the Ville.

Switch Background Styles of Launchpad in OS X 10.7.3

The OS X 10.7.3 update brought with it a variety of subtle changes, including a minor adjustment to how the Launchpad background image style is switched. In previous Mac OS X versions, Command+B would switch between the background effect styles, but this is now achieved withControl+Option+Command+B.

Try it yourself by opening Launchpad and then hitting the Control+Option+Command+B keys to alternate between backgrounds with blur, unblurred, black and white, and blurred black and white. You can see samples of these background style effects below.

Without a blurred background:

Using the unblurred color background makes Launchpad on the Mac closely resemble Springboard on an iOS device.

Best Buy Dreams Up a $1499 42-Inch ‘Apple HDTV’ for Customer Feedback

The Verge reports that Best Buy has been surveying some of its customers on proposed products and services, with the company including a description of a 42-inch “Apple HDTV” priced at $1499. The listing is undoubtedly simply a concept dreamed up by Best Buy to help gauge interest in such an offering, but provides an interesting perspective on what the major electronics retailer might be hoping for and what it thinks its customers would want in an Apple television set.

Be one of the first to get the all new 42″ Apple HDTV at Best Buy for $1499. Apple finally reinvents what a TV can do:

- 42″ 1080p LED flat panel display
- Incorporates Apple’s operating system (iOS) found in its current Apple TV set top box which allows you to purchase and stream movies and other entertainment from the Internet
- Download and use apps from the App Store. Can you imagine playing Angry Birds on a big screen in your living room?
- Supports Apple’s new iCloud service for storing your movies, TV shows, and music content that you’ve purchased from iTunes and beam them to your Apple HDTV.
- Use your iPad or iPhone as a remote control, and do everything from controlling your TV, to purchasing new shows and swapping content between your Apple devices and the iCloud service.
- Built-in convenience with built in iSight camera and microphone for Skype.
- In addition to iTunes, stream content from popular sites such as Netflix, YouTube, and flickr.
- Available for $1499

The promotional text makes no mention of Siri or voice control, which has been rumored to be one of the device’s key revolutionary features following Steve Jobs’ revelation that he had “finally cracked” how to reshape the way people interact with their television sets.

Best Buy’s survey questions on the proposed Apple HDTV go on to assess respondents’ level of interest in purchasing the product, whether they believe it is new and different and whether it would solve a problem or fulfill a need for them.

Apple Saw No Change in iPad Sales Following Kindle Fire Introduction

Contrary to some reports, Apple CEO Tim Cook said today that the company hadn’t seen any slowdown in iPad sales following the introduction of the much-hyped Kindle Fire tablet.

When asked by an analyst during today’s quarterly earnings call about the impact on the iPad from lower priced tablets, Cook noted that the company sold a record 15.4 million iPads and that Apple doesn’t consider “limited function tablets and e-readers to be in the same category as the iPad”. A big reason for the iPads success, Cook believes, is that the ecosystem for the iPad is “in a class by itself”.

We strongly believe in optimizing applications from day one to take advantage of the larger canvas. There are only a few hundred apps designed for the competition, versus more than 170,000 apps designed specifically for iPad. People who want an iPad won’t settle for a limited function tablet.

Apple execs have said before, and Cook reiterated today, that they believe tablets will pass the PC market in units, and that in the United States according to IDC, tablets outsold desktop PC’s last quarter on a unit basis.

Throwing down the gauntlet to other tablet makers — who thus far haven’t been able to mount a significant challenge to the iPad — Cook finished by saying Apple was going to “continue to innovate like crazy” and that the company will continue to compete with any company currently shipping tablets, or anyone who may enter the market in the future.

The next generation iPad 3 with a high-resolution Retina Display is expected to be introduced in the next few months.
